Shawnee is no stranger to arts and culture! Our community benefits from being nestled within the greater Kansas City area, which overall offers a fantastic scene of visual and performing arts. Specifically, Shawnee offers a few different venues where you can catch a show and a variety of opportunities to get your culture fix.
Shawnee also offers historical opportunities to understand our community's culture! Through museums and programming, you'll have lots of options to expand your knowledge base on a variety of topics. Check out the full list that we've put together below.
Shawnee Town 1929 is a historical museum dedicated to Shawnee's roots as a farm-truck community. The museum's grounds mimic life in the 1920's and offer true-to-life buildings all in the form of what would have been the "town square," including a 1920's grocery store, gas station, car dealership, barbershop, farmstead, and more!
Even better, this historical site offers programming and events all throughout the year, including their routine "Time Travelers" program featuring living historically dressed actors and hands-on activities.
The Theatre in the Park is located within the wonderful Johnson County Parks' Shawnee Mission Park Complex. Each year since 1970, they have produced musical theatre under the stars for the Johnson County area. Their shows are often humorous, entertaining, and perfect for the whole family with talent sourced directly from the local community. PLUS - you can bring your own food into T.I.P if you'd like for a full-on picnic.
